Long Term Care (LTC) is no longer synonymous with "geriatric care" In fact, in the past 20 years, adults aged 31 to 64 years have been the fastest growing population in LTC facilities. According to the CDC, nearly 8% of LTC residents are aged less than 65 years. For this session, we define younger adults as those aged 18 to 64 years. Questions to consider in caring for this population are: What are the needs and goals of care for these residents? How will these residents' psychologic, social, psychiatric, sexual, and other basic human needs be met? While this session cannot cover every need, it will discuss Regulatory Barriers, Sexuality (including Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Residents), Choosing your Battles when dealing with problematic behaviors, and Substance Abuse (including Pain Management and Drug Seeking behaviors).
- Evaluate regulatory barriers that inhibit the delivery of individualized care for younger adults with behavioral health needs in long-term care settings.
- Design age-appropriate care plans that incorporate goals of care, daily activities, life skills training, and considerations for sexuality and intimacy.
- Critique current evidence-based strategies for managing substance use disorders, including pain management and drug-seeking behaviors, in younger adult populations.
- Formulate individualized non-pharmacological interventions to effectively address and mitigate problematic behaviors in long-term care residents.
