In this interactive session, participants will learn key evidence-based strategies for confronting and communicating with a bully. NAB Credit Available

In senior living communities where residents are in close proximity with one another, they can form cliques, exert power over others and bully. In recent years, this issue has garnered more attention, particularly because bullying among senior peer groups is on the rise. As some bullied victims choose to remain silent, there is no real way to find out how significant the problem is. And, often times, even when staff or peers intervene, the problem does not seem to go away.

This session will provide information that you need to know about senior bullying so as to take preventive measures or intervene on time. In this session, participants will be offered a brief overview of the definition, incidence, characteristics and types of senior-to-senior bullying. The impact of bullying is detrimental to the health and well-being of our seniors. Even one instance can have a lasting impact! Therefore, it is not enough just to define bullying communities need to know the warning signs, the physical and emotional impact, and what to do if it happens to them. Therefore, participants will be introduced to interventions they can apply to reduce bullying as well as specific and targeted recommendations for what staff and others can say to the bully to mitigate impact and minimize occurrence.

In this interactive session, participants will learn key evidence-based strategies for confronting and communicating with a bully. Approaches include empathy, questioning, confrontation, deontology, acknowledgement, and others. Several case examples will be offered with opportunities for participants to brainstorm approaches and dialogue about advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Many people struggle with what to say to a bully to stop their behavior. There is no one "right" answer to this issue. But at the conclusion of the session, participants will have additional tools in their communication toolbox.

    • Analyze the prevalence, characteristics, and types of bullying behaviors occurring within senior living communities.
    • Propose evidence-based preventative strategies to reduce the impact and occurrence of senior-to-senior bullying.
    • Demonstrate targeted communication techniques and interventions designed to de-escalate bullying behaviors and prevent reoccurrence.

Truly healthy teams don't just perform well they create an environment where sustained excellence becomes inevitable. They develop the resilience to face challenges, adapt to change, and grow stronger together. Team health serves as the foundation that either strengthens or undermines performance over time. When teams are truly healthy, they achieve remarkable synergy, accomplishing what no individual could achieve alone. This synergy elevates everyone's performance and creates a culture of possibility and potential.

Leadership is not just about achieving results; it's about fostering a culture that motivates, supports, and retains talent. In a high-performance culture, team members feel valued, secure, and empowered to give their best. However, such a culture doesn't happen by chance. It requires leaders to be intentional in how they show up and lead.

This session explores five key leadership strategies that transform team dynamics: practicing self-awareness, communicating clearly and consistently, leading with empathy, fostering fairness and consistency, and cultivating optimism and resilience. These leadership strategies build trust and authenticity, creating a safe space where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and feedback without fear of judgment. By applying these principles, leaders can build truly healthy teams that unlock their full potential and drive long-term success for their organization.

Attendees will explore compliance gaps, review best practices in contesting denials, and consider strategies to safeguard access to care for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in skilled nursing settings. NAB Credit Available

Significant reforms to managed care oversight were introduced in the Medicare Advantage Final Rule for Contract Year (CY) 2024, with full implementation beginning January 1, 2024. Now, nearly two years into enforcement, providers and managed care organizations (MCOs) are adjusting to heightened federal expectations. Under these rules, MCOs must follow traditional Medicare coverage criteria, limit prior authorization requirements, and respect the clinical judgment of treating providers.

This session' led by long-term care reimbursement expert Maureen McCarthy will examine how these changes have reshaped the provider-MCO dynamic. Attendees will explore compliance gaps, review best practices in contesting denials, and consider strategies to safeguard access to care for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in skilled nursing settings. Drawing on real-world experiences, Maureen will share insights on operationalizing these rules and holding MCOs accountable to ensure care continuity and regulatory compliance.

    • Display MAO Trend data
    • Review the CY24 and CY25 Final Rule changes for MAOs that are available to assist providers with claims denials
    • Discuss the changes to Medicare Advantage plan coverage criteria impacting early termination denials of care
    • Identify CY26 proposed changes for MAO claims appeals process
    • Explain how an appeals tracking system can assist in managing MAO claims appeals

In today's high-pressure work environment, many leaders feel overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted, trapped in what I call the 'Energy Exhaustion Cycle.' This cycle is driven by a disengaged workforce, where employees lack emotional connections with their leader, their work, and their colleagues. This transformative presentation goes beyond traditional task-based initiatives to conquer this disengagement, to addressing its root cause, and offering leaders an attention-focused solution that enhances engagement, productivity and profitability, without adding to their workload.

Participants will be taken on inspiring journey filled with compelling stories, lighthearted humor, and actionable best practices designed to create emotional connections in the workplace. They will discover how to harness the power of their attention to forge deep emotional connections and cultivate team unity around shared purpose and priorities. Participants will learn to focus on "Hearts before Habits," "We before Me," and "Community before Unity," revitalizing their leadership approach and transforming their workplace culture. This session will equip leaders with strategies to strengthen their team's sense of identity, purpose, and belonging and move them from just surviving in the "Energy Exhaustion Cycle" to thriving in the "Energy Exhilaration Cycle"

Participants will explore how to cultivate meaningful connections by knowing who their team members are, not just what they do. Participants will learn how to empower their people through delegation and collaboration that not only build trust and confidence but also encourage recognition and growth. Participants will discover effective strategies to combat workplace loneliness by fostering a sense of community.

By implementing these practices, leaders will see increased engagement, reduced turnover, higher operating margins, greater qualify of life for all. This session will give participants the opportunity for reviving their leadership approach, thriving in their role, and achieving remarkable results all without more striving to achieve more.

    • Analyze the root causes of leadership stress and exhaustion and determine how shifting attention and priorities can transition teams from the "Energy Exhaustion Cycle" to the "Energy Exhilaration Cycle."
    • Focus leadership attention on practices that build emotional connections with employees, elevating engagement and productivity without increasing workload.
    • Apply the principles of "Hearts before Habits," "We before Me," and "Community before Unity" to strengthen identity, purpose, and belonging, aligning teams around shared goals and values.

This session is presented by experts who have guided Skilled Nursing Facilities through dozens of payment system transitions. Speakers will share insights and review operational strategies that ensure your facility enjoys a "soft landing' and avoids "rate shock" that destabilizes the healthcare continuum. You'll gain access to PDPM capture patterns and benchmarks from providers in states that have already made the transition. NAB credit available

The modern Skilled Nursing Facility bears little resemblance to a "nursing homes" of the past. Sadly, payment systems have not kept pace. We've seen three iterations of Medicare's Prospective Payment System since 1999, with all providers bound to the same national model. Medicaid is state specific. Without the vast resources of CMS and the federal government, many state rate setting departments lack the resources to effectuate a comprehensive payment system update they've put it off so long that rates are effectively arbitrary in some markets. Now they have no choice, if case-mix adjustment is part of the rate setting equation, PDPM is the catalyst, and if your state isn't equipped to manage the change, you'll be dealing with a new private contractor's unfamiliar ideas and standards. PDPM is a revenue delivery system, it has nothing to do with funding. All things being equal, PDPM amounts to a redistribution of scarce Medicaid dollars among providers. SNFs that boasted high CMIs distorted by Rehab RUGs often find they haven't accurately captured the clinical issues that now drive payment. This presents a major problem with only one solution: The key to a successful transition is preparation. These lessons will prove invaluable as you benchmark performance against competitors. Additionally, we'll explore innovative technologies designed to enhance compliant clinical-reimbursement management, ensuring your facility is prepared, even if your state is not.

    • Explain payment system transition methodology and the importance of preparing for Medicaid payment changes.
    • Apply strategies for compliant reimbursement capture within the new Medicaid payment system.
    • Measure Medicaid case-mix index (CMI) performance relative to peer group benchmarks.
    • Explain compliance implications associated with SNF technology.

This session will discuss Regulatory Barriers, Sexuality (including Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Residents), Choosing your Battles when dealing with problematic behaviors, and Substance Abuse (including Pain Management and Drug Seeking behaviors). NAB Credit Available

Long Term Care (LTC) is no longer synonymous with "geriatric care" In fact, in the past 20 years, adults aged 31 to 64 years have been the fastest growing population in LTC facilities. According to the CDC, nearly 8% of LTC residents are aged less than 65 years. For this session, we define younger adults as those aged 18 to 64 years. Questions to consider in caring for this population are: What are the needs and goals of care for these residents? How will these residents' psychologic, social, psychiatric, sexual, and other basic human needs be met? While this session cannot cover every need, it will discuss Regulatory Barriers, Sexuality (including Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Residents), Choosing your Battles when dealing with problematic behaviors, and Substance Abuse (including Pain Management and Drug Seeking behaviors).
