As the Omicron variant continues to rapidly spread across the U.S., and data continues to show the effectiveness of boosters in fighting this new variant, the urgency to get long term care residents and staff a booster before January 1has never been greater.

AHCA/NCAL, LeadingAge and the AARP will co-host a town hall featuring Admiral Rachel L. Levine, Assistant Secretary for Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps to answer questions about the Omicron variant, boosters, and why we need to step up the timeline to get the booster. We will also hear from Walter Ramos, President and CEO of Rogerson Communities, about his experience encouraging booster uptake, as well as a family member of a current nursing home resident. This panel will be moderated by Dr. David Gifford, Chief Medical Officer at AHCA/NCAL.

Registration to access this webinar is available to everyone.

AHCA/NCAL recently put together a webinar recording on economic impact payments (EIPs) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and important facts for skilled nursing facilities, ICFs/IID, and assisted living centers to know on the use of them.  IRS began issuing electronic EIPs on or about April 15 to people who received a tax refund electronically.  The webinar covers what EIPs are and what steps we should take to protect beneficiaries receiving this benefit.  EIP funds belong to the resident and they make decisions about fund use or may request assistance and guidance (such supports are acceptable).  The recording also covers such areas as whether a resident can give their EIP funds to a family member and what to do if EIP funds are being misused.  Finally, a variety of resources from the Social Security Administration to the National Center on Elder Law and Rights are available at the end of the webinar in which you can find further information that will be of assistance.  If you have any questions around EIPs, please email COVID19@ahca.org.

Since 2011 skilled nursing facility (SNF), and in some cases assisted living (AL) residents, have only had access to limited telehealth services under Medicare fee-for service. However, with the announcement of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued several waivers of existing telehealth limits during the PHE under provisions in Section 1135 of the Social Security Act.  Since March 1, 2020, the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has removed geographic limits, limits on the type of services and frequencies of physician telehealth visits, limits on telehealth services that non-physician practitioners such as nurse practitioners can furnish, and removed the prohibition on furnishing physician and occupational therapy and speech-language pathology services.  Additionally, relaxation of certain privacy regulations by HHS has permitted an explosion in the use of lower-cost audio-visual technology including smartphones, tablets, and software such as facetime and skype in the delivery of telehealth services.  In this webinar, four AHCA members from independent owners to large multistate for-profit and nonprofit organizations will share their experiences in implementing the COVID-19 telehealth waivers and how they have helped improve care during the PHE.  They will also share their thoughts on which waiver details they would like for AHCA to advocate to CMS, HHS, and Congress to make permanent.
