Fire Safety and Evacuation – Best Practices for Assisted Living Providers

This one-hour program will focus on best practices and regulatory expectations for Assisted Living fire safety and evacuation planning.  The essential elements of an effective and compliant fire safety program will be reviewed including staffing levels, building features, resident capability, training, drills, and coordination with the local fire department.  Using lessons learned from recent fires, this program will highlight common compliance challenges, documentation and training requirements, and practical steps providers can take to strengthen their fire safety programs, protect residents, and reduce organizational risk.  

Objectives:  

• Recognize the varying types of Assisted Living evacuation concepts.  
• Determine the appropriateness for the implementation of defend in place procedures. 
• Identify best practice fire training and fire drill procedures.
• Recognize the varying levels of sprinkler protection found in Assisted Living communities.

Dave has spent 30 years specializing in healthcare fire safety, life safety, and emergency preparedness. He is a past Chairman of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Health Care Section Executive Board and currently serves as the Chair of the Health Care Section Education Committee. He is a member of the NFPA 101 Technical Correlating Committee and previously served on the Technical Committee on Health Care Occupancies. Dave also has fire service experience at the Company Officer level in Prince George’s County, MD and Monroe County, NY. He is a past Fire Chief in Honeoye Falls, NY.
