Each year more than one in four older adults, age 65 and older, experience a fall, resulting in about 3 million emergency department visits, 950,000 hospitalizations, and 32,000 deaths. Falls are often preventable if you know what to screen for and what the risk factors for falls include. This presentation will include an introduction to evidence-based screening tools, explain why it is important to screen each resident for falls, how to use tools and resources available to you, a live demonstration will be provided on utilizing the Falls Free CheckUp tool.
Objectives: After attending this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of screening and what to do after the screening process.
- Discuss how fall screening tools can be used in assisted living.
- Incorporate fall screening tools into assisted living admission processes. Audience: administrators, nurses, and direct care staff in assisted living processes.
