  • Higher Acuity in Assisted Living: Risk or Reward?

    This session will focus on key steps to effectively managing higher acuity. Addressing key high risk areas will be a focus of the presentation. This will include wandering/elopement, falls, medication management, and care transitions. The session will include a discussion how health care reform may impact acuity and resident services, particularly the new readmission penalties being imposed by CMS and the development of Accountable Care Organizations.

    Managing the clinical care of residents is an increasingly important part of the services provided in assisted living. Fifty percent of assisted living residents have three or more chronic conditions and forty-two percent have Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia.

    This session will focus on key steps to effectively managing higher acuity. Addressing key high risk areas will be a focus of the presentation.   • Taking Part B Therapy Beyond the $3,700 Threshold – What You Need to Know About the New Manual Medical Review Process

    The Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 extended the therapy cap exceptions process until December 31, 2012. The law also placed a $3,700 limit on the amount of therapy that could be provided without pre-authorization. Starting on October 1, providers must seek pre-authorization for patients needing therapy over and above the $3,700 threshold. Around Labor Day, CMS began to detail how the agency will implement this new policy, which is being phased in from October 1 to December 1, 2012.

    1. Understand the components of the new manual medical review process CMS requires under the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012.
    2. Gain insight about the specific patient information and documentation MACs will require when providers submit pre-authorization requests that are needed for Medicare reimbursement for additional therapy for those patients near the $3,700 threshold.
    3. Understand the steps that providers will need to take when requesting pre-authorization.
    4. Obtain links to all CMS issued guidance and documents regarding this new policy
